Default L33T filter

I have played online games for (unfortunately) about 10 years and I have never used the term noob, l33t, haxor, pwn, or any other gay shite like that. I would like to see a filter for it the same way we have a language filter.
actually just go ahead and ban the word elite also. Gaaaaaaaaaaaay.

This isn't a joke, I'm serious

I would personally like to see a filter for people posting using the word gay in relation to anything beyond homosexual tendencies or in a degrading manner, as well as forceful matricide of anyone unable to beat out of their children use of even dumber and more pop-culture referencing as shite...

Seriously though, we all understand the term pwned, owned, haxxed, newb, noob, etc., few will use it and a few have become actually quite ingrained, such as saying newbie, not derogatory but just informational, and was around long before computer games.

I think the connotation in the word "newbie" is endearment. And, I would be in favor of an option to filter those words out (some, probably not all. Some morons only seem to know "1337 speak")

Good point, you got me there. So I was beinga little hypocritical, however my generation commenly uses those terms so i guess I was infected. However, no the terms pwn and newb DEFINATELY did not start before computer games. Pwn and l33t are computer game terms. If I am wong please let me know. Regarless it was made popular by computer games.

"1337 speak" could be just internet terms, but I doubt it. They definitely evolved from games (or the gaming community).

Were you "infected"? or did you just mimick the behavior that was happening around you like everyone is prone to doing

1337 is a computer term indeed, as is pwned, however, the reference I made was to newbie, which has been around a very long time, it is generally used for new comers to tradeskills, such as mechanics, carpenters, so on, and the first time I heard the term was probably a fair 15 years back coming from a man who had spent years as a helicopter technician in the army, and commonly referred to the necessity of training "newbies to the bench".

It is the lingo of the computer world, you really must evolve with it, as with any other industry, it is like calling it a cat instead of a cat5e computer network cable, or using the term mob, avatar, shard, so on.

Not to mention I'm glad you picked up on that hint above. Merely just messing with you.

And finally, I believe 1337 speak is kind of like pidgin english, or creoles of language, save that we all know pwned means someone or something got completely destroyed, and 1337 means whatever it is attributed to is good or thought to be good.

Creole Language, that's funny because I grew up in Louisiana. But they weren't half as annoying. Personally I think it would be a great marketing gimmick for their advertisments. You know like "Axed spawn camping" etc "Pwned l33t speak". I dunno, I personally would like to see it as a joke.

You can't ban the word gay, the definition of gay is happy

Just because gay is used to refer to homosexuals doesn't change the original definition. Furthermore, derogatory comments are the concern of filters, homosexual can be used in a derogatory notation, but it is a legitimate word, just like calling someone a Jew.

There is already a function for you to overcome all the High School, D&D, moronic, homosexual and every other form of derogatory comment, Ignore. If your in a party with someone and they start talking like that then leave, if your truly convicted about it, otherwise deal with it. If your in town and you see someone spaming some ignorant BS then simply Black List them. Hell, I don't even read that shit unless I'm looking for something anyways (my minds always entertaining perverted thoughts on the side). This may be a game but the population is still composed of the same idiotic, mentaly and verbaly deficient, immature, and ignorat Humans that you work, cross and hate in real life. If you can't overcome the interaction of other Humans (which are going to be mostly idiots) then you are destined for solo play..... console anyone?

Bahamut, my reference was a joke towards Sybban dislike of terms like pwned and 1337, while using the term gay in a manner that was supposed to be demeaning towards homosexuals. As well, I never gave the appearance of wanting to ban the use of the word gay, I said to ban use of the word in such terms unless it is properly used, because such derogatory use can be likened to calling someone a jew without actually referring to their religion...

As well, you're apparently one of those people that think ruining another person's fun is cause for that "another person" to simply ignore it, I hear this all too often, if you don't like it, don't look. Really though, attempting to use morale strength by forcing another person to change, has never lead to correctness...I could personally care less what people say or do, but, I know there are many more people who are affected, and that is where the problem comes.

I utterly despise 1337 speak. I understand Newbie as an old term that existed before the net and MMORPGs and I used common netspeak.. like lol and such. Personally I would prefer to never have to see the majority of the rest of it dessecrating my monitor.

HOWEVER.. I realize that some people are no longer capable or normal language at all or any facsimile of itand you can't FORCE anyone to type coherently. Honestly I think it was mostly started by someone with either horrid typing skills or a messed up keyboard who insited that it was the cool thing to do..lol

Currently the only way to avoid this kind of thing is to avoid those sort of people.
A filter would be nice. I say a manual filter would be better. Give people a chance to add words or character combinations to a list that get filtered out for THEM.

The downside of this is I don't know if it would effect character names. If it did, we might just lose the fellow running around with Uber McOwnage as a name. I know it's my own opinion but I get less offended by derogitory or sexually offensive names than 1337 ones. I'd rather team up with someone named F**K Nuts any day of the week before I'd team up with Mr. McOwnage.

My 15 year old tries to use 1337 speak when I happen to IM with him. I have to constantly correct him. But according to him, ALL his friends type that way. The sad thing is that my son is failing English.. just like ALL his friends are. But I'll save that rant for the county school board..

And I am most definitely NOT a grammar nazi. I make just as many typos and grammar mistakes as the next person. But 99% of the time it's an accident and not a deliberate attempt to mangle the language.

I always thought 1337-speak began with the whole Doom modding community, but that was long ago and I don't remember that time too well (I lived in South Padre Island, and partied a lot LOL). However, here is an article about it that is pretty interesting and points to Half-Life as the beginning. I still think it was Doom, but who cares anyway as it is highly annoying and completely outdated. I mean, I was modding Doom back in like 96, 97?

I started hearing in MUDs (multiple user dimensions online) around 93-94.

It's more of an annoyance than vulgar.

I would just rather not go into town and see

"I 1337 haxor pwnage roxd joo noob ass"

Of course i usually take the route of playing the "what game" or the "mistell game"

for those of you who don't know what the what game is it's when you try to confuse the person annoying you so badly that he leaves the area or shuts up

to achieve this say phrases like "What's that smell?" then "This big ass catipillar ran by" thens oemthing like "And then this guy pulls a carrot out and the girl is like ...."
Just stuff like that everytime they talk. I know it's chilidish but the result is insanely funny and it's harmless because no vulgarities or personal attacks are needed. It's really fun if you have a friend who will join in. Then you can actually have a conversation with each but send all the tells to the target and just carry on a nice conversation while he sits there trying tof igure out if he's crazy or not.
